Hugh O’Donnell was a painter, drawer, and printmaker born in London, England in 1950. He was granted a Japanese Monbusho Scholarship to study at Kyoto City University of Arts and resided in Japan from 1974 until 1976. He produced many paintings and drawings during his time in Japan.

Influenced by nature, O’Donnell represents this in an unconventional manner converting these forms into pure abstraction. His use of line and shape evokes a sense of independence and freedom. Forms actively exist on the surface to create an energetic composition.

O’Donnell’s works have been exhibited globally and are in many collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, New York; Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York; National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York; Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and The Tate Gallery in London, England.
