Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1955, Jaume Plensa has lived and worked globally in Germany, Belgium, England, France, and the United States. He studied at the Llotja School of Art and the Saint Jordi School of Fine Art, both located in Barcelona, Spain.

Although he worked primarily in abstraction early in his career, Plensa’s style has evolved to incorporate increased figuration. His most recognizable compositions include representations of faces, specifically human ones. He is interested in the divide between everyday life and pure abstraction and one’s ability to simultaneously exist within both realms.

He has produced many sculptures intended for public space and is known for his use of unconventional materials such as water, sound, and light paired with more conventional sculptural materials. Additionally, prints have played an important role in Plensa’s artistic journey. Intimate and emotional, these works on paper, similar to his sculptures, often incorporate human faces in pairing with elements such as text.

Plensa has had solo exhibitions of his work at institutions all over the world including Galerie Lelong in Paris, France; Museo Casa de la Moneda in Madrid, Spain; EMMA-Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Helsinki, Finland; Richard Gray Gallery in Chicago, Illinois; Musee Picasso in Antibes, France; Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas; and Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain.
