William MacKendree is an American artist born in Augusta, Georgia in 1948. Between the years 1975 and 1982 MacKendree lived in Greece where he traveled throughout Greece and the surrounding areas studying the native sculpture and painting techniques. It is likely that these encounters influenced MacKendree’s interest in minimalist figuration.Upon leaving Greece, MacKendree moved to Paris where he still resides today.

In his style, MacKendree is able to produce abstracted works that often include recognizable figuration. Motifs and symbols can be recognized in his works, often derived from natural and urban settings. The use of linear shapes contrasts against large, uninterrupted areas of space. MacKendree’s work is included in numerous collections all over the world including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France; the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Toulouse, France; the Neue Galerie der Stadt in Linz, Austria; and the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, France.
